High student loan debts are a bigger relationship consideration in a partner than their being divorced, having a child from a previous relationship, or having a non-violent felony on their record.
The world is a tough place. For student loan borrowers this is an obvious statement made by many. Student loan debt is affecting people in discrete ways we don’t consider. IonTuition.com, an education-fintech company specializing in helping borrowers manage their student loans, released a study on how student loan debt are affecting recent graduates, including their dating life. According to the research “75% of recent U.S college grads perceive student loan debt as baggage,” and none of us like dealing with baggage, whether it be emotional or literal.
In this study, 1,000 college graduates with an average of $37,000 of student loan debt were surveyed. 12% of these participants actually suggested that “high student loan debts are a bigger relationship consideration in a partner than their being divorced, having a child from a previous relationship, or having a non-violent felony on their record.” While this number isn’t substantial beyond belief it is shocking to see that former “deal breakers” don’t matter as much as student loans do to some people.
Of these college graduates surveyed in the study over 70% of them said they would be willing to help pay off their significant other’s loans. One-third of those surveyed said they would look into dating a wealthy benefactor to help cut down on the student loan debt they possess. Loan debt can keep us from succeeding in many areas of our life. Thankfully, student loan debt does have a small upside in that you attended school and ideally you will be set up to pay those loans off.
The main problem outlined by those who were surveyed was a simple issue, money. When most millennials are struggling to find work out of college finding the financial security for rent and for their monthly student loan payment can be a Sisyphean task. Even if those are the only two sets of bills you have to pay it is still difficult to make your wallet stretch far enough to keep yourself firmly planted in the dating world.
